BANNED AND RESTRICTED LISTS

Cards whose art, text, name, or combination thereof that are racially or culturally offensive are banned in all formats. This list is a work in progress. Click here for the list.

Historic Banned Cards

The following cards are suspended:

No Current Suspensions

What Suspension Means

Suspending cards is our way to incorporate Magic's history of using bans and restrictions to address issues with the current meta while allowing greater flexibility to adjust as a digital-first format.

For gameplay purposes, a suspension works like a ban, in that the card will not be legal to use in the format while it is suspended. But unlike how we handle banning cards, we plan to use the flexibility that a digital format provides to move cards onto and off the suspension list on a regular basis. Suspension isn't a final verdict; it's an indication that we think this card may be causing issues, and we'd like to see what the meta looks like without that influence.

Suspension is also a temporary measure. Some may be returned to the playable pool (likely because we believe changes to the current Historic environment provides the appropriate answers or countermeasures), and the rest will move to being fully banned.

The following cards are banned:

Agent of Treachery

Magic Online Banned and Restricted Policies

Formats unique to Magic Online have their own Banned and Restricted lists. Those lists are maintained on the format pages themselves. Use the links below to view any of those pages.

For formats that exist in tabletop as well as Magic Online, banned and restricted announcements are announced on Mondays by Tabletop Studio (R&D), and are effective on Magic Online at noon Pacific Time on the following day.

When a card is banned or restricted, players using the newly banned card in a league have until the Magic Online effective time to finish their league courses. At that time, any remaining players with newly illegal decks will be removed from the league with their entry option returned to their collection. If a card is unbanned or unrestricted, players can join existing leagues with decks containing those cards after the update.

BANNED AND RESTRICTED LISTS

One key to the continued health of Magic is diversity. It is vitally important to ensure that there are multiple competitive decks for the tournament player to choose from. Why? If there were only a single viable deck to play, tournaments would quickly stagnate as players were forced to either play that deck or a deck built specifically to beat it. In addition, different players enjoy playing different types of decks. If there are plenty of viable options to play, there will be more players at more tournaments.

To help maintain the diversity and health of the Magic tournament environment, a system of banned and restricted lists has been developed. These lists are made up of cards that are either not allowed at all, or allowed only in a very limited manner.

It's important to note a couple of things: First, these lists apply only to Constructed formats and not Limited formats. Second, the banned and restricted lists are format-specific, so a card that is banned in Modern may still be legal to play in Standard.

Banned Cards

If a card appears on the banned list for your chosen format, then you may not include that card in your deck or sideboard. Doing so makes your deck illegal to play in any sanctioned tournaments for that format.

Cards are usually banned from play if they enable a deck or play style that heavily skews the play environment. What does that mean? If the card were legal, a competitive player either must be playing it, or must be specifically targeting it with his or her own strategies.

Some cards are banned because they have proven to simply be too powerful in their respective format. While hundreds of hours are spent rigorously playtesting sets before their release, the complexity of Magic makes it nearly impossible to accurately predict all the ways the new cards interact with older ones.

Cards whose art, text, name, or combination thereof that are racially or culturally offensive are banned in all formats. This list is a work in progress. Click here for the list.

Restricted Cards

If you wish to use a card that’s on the restricted list for your chosen format, you may include only a single copy of that card, counting both your main deck and your sideboard. Currently, only the Vintage format uses a restricted list.

For formats that exist in tabletop as well as Magic Online, banned and restricted announcements are announced on Mondays by Tabletop Studio (R&D), and are effective on Magic Online at noon Pacific Time on the following day.

At that time, any remaining players with newly illegal decks will be removed from the league with their entry option returned to their collection. If a card is unbanned or unrestricted, players can join existing leagues with decks containing those cards after the update.

Updated to reflect the new Banlist that came into effect on 1 January 2024.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG has had an ever-updating Banlist since the start - and there are some good reasons why! Some quick-thinking players discovered loopholes involving some pretty crazy combos, allowing moves that would quickly break or ruin the game - we are looking at you Last Turn. Basically, there are some cards that are far more powerful than even the creators intended, due to the complexity and growth of the game.

Konami's latest Yu-Gi-Oh! Banlist came into effect on 1 January 2024 - revising the list of Forbidden, Limited and Semi-Limited cards in the TCG meta.

Below we've broken down the Banlist into ban type and card type, and will be updating this list every time Konami updates the meta. The list is focused on the Advanced Format, but the only difference between that and the Traditional Format is that all Forbidden cards in Traditional are simply just Limited:

Forbidden Yu-Gi-Oh! cards

Limited Yu-Gi-Oh! cards

Semi-Limited Yu-Gi-Oh! cards

Yu Gi Oh! Banlist January 2024

For Yugioh TCG players, here's all Forbidden, Limited, and Semi-Limited Yugioh cards in January 2024, including the December 19 update.

Alex Evans

Published: Jan 2, 2024

Yu Gi Oh! Trading Card Game

Though Yugioh is more of a wild west than other TCGs like Magic the Gathering or Pokemon TCG, the official Yugioh banlist makes many Yugioh cards Forbidden, Limited, or Semi Limited to keep the game fair, fun, and balanced. To help you keep your beloved tournament decks legal, we track the full list and latest updates in this guide.

Once you’ve pored through the Yu Gi Oh banlist (and the YuGiOh Master Duel banlist, which we cover in a separate guide), you might also enjoy our guides on how to play Yugioh online and the best Yugioh Master Duel meta decks. Or, if you’re a collector, check out the most expensive rare YuGiOh cards around, or even the best YuGiOh cards, like, ever.

For now, though, we’ll launch right into the latest Yugioh banlist (in force from January 1, 2024), and then explain exactly how the banlist rules work surrounding Forbidden, Limited, and Semi-Limited cards.

Yugioh banlist 2024

The most recent version of the Yugioh banlist was released on December 19, 2023, which came into force on January 1, 2024. We’ll update this guide the moment we hear more.

The January 1 Yugioh banlist changes are as follows:

These cards are now Forbidden

Agido The Ancient Sentinel

Kelbek The Ancient Vanguard

Mathmech Circular

Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights

These cards are now Limited:

Unchained Soul of Sharvara

Rescue-ACE Air Lifter

Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders

Orcust Harp Horror

Gozen Match

Rivalry of Warlords

There Can Only Be One

Sunavalon Dryas

Sunvine Healer

Ib The World Chalice Justicar

Snatch Steal

These cards are now Semi-Limited:

Purrely Sleep Memory

Dinowrestler Pankratops

Speedroid Terrortop

These cards have been taken off the banlist:

Infernity Archfiend

Kashtira Unicorn

Mind Control

Spellbook of Judgement

Upstart Goblin

Pot of Desires

If a Yugioh card is on the banlist, that means it is either Forbidden, Limited, or Semi-Limited. You can’t play Forbidden cards, you can only have one copy of a Limited card in your Yugioh decks, and you can can only run two copies of a Semi-Limited card.

There are two Yugioh banlists, one for Advanced Format and another for Traditional Format. The banlists contain all the same cards, but cards that are Forbidden in Advanced Format (ie, totally banned) are Limited in Traditional Format: you can take one copy of the card.

The following YuGiOh cards used to be on the banlist, but as of the September 25 update, they’re totally free to use.

Monster/Effect

Herald of Orange Light

Salamangreat Gazelle

What is the Yu Gi Oh banlist?

Yu Gi Oh! Trading Card Game’s publisher, Konami, releases an updated version of the Yu Gi Oh banlist on its official website every couple of months. This lists restrictions on the cards you can include in constructed Yu Gi Oh! decks.

The Yugioh banlist’s rules are simple:

If a card is ‘Forbidden’, it cannot be used in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, or Side Deck

If a card is ‘Limited’, you can only have one copy of it in your main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck combined

If a card is ‘Semi-limited’, you can only have two copies of it in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck combined.

There are separate banlists for the game’s ‘Advanced’ format (which is used in Regional, National, and World Championship events) and the much looser ‘Traditional’ format. For example many cards are Forbidden in Advanced, but only Limited in Traditional format.

Forbidden, Limited, and Semi-limited cards can be cards of any type, and the Yu Gi Oh banlist typically contains numerous Monster, Monster/Effect, Monster/Fusion, Monster/Link, Monster/Synchro, Monster/Xyz, Spell, and Trap type cards.

Disappointed that the prize cards in your collection aren’t viable with the latest banlist? You could look into other TCGs. The first Disney Lorcana set is much easier to get hold of since it received a much-needed reprint, so now’s a great time to get on board with a new game.

Alex Evans Alex is the gaming omnivore, clumsy escapist, and award-winning nerd who’s captained the good ship Wargamer from its 2021 relaunch to now.

He has a degree in Politics and a Master’s in International Journalism, but failed his cycling proficiency test twice. He speaks (mostly) fluent German, believes all things are political, and is tragically, hopelessly in love with Warhammer 40k.

When not pressing buttons at Wargamer HQ, you can often find him impatiently painting miniatures; half-finishing strategy board games against himself; or drinking lager in the bath with a Horus Heresy audiobook playing.
